How I write #1: Outlining

Outliner vs Non-Outliner

This actually became a serious question for me during the last months. A writer typically knows if he’s an outliner or not. And, to be honest, where is the border between making an outline and not?
I never outlined my work. I had an idea, wrote it down, worked it into the rest of the story. I never made notes, just pure creative wiritng. No planning, no further logical thinking required.
Then i had this fabolous idea for writing another novel. The idea came to me during studying about political issues in the media world.
That was quite different from anything I wrote before, because the world of media and PR is huge and filled with scientific texts. It never occured to me while i was in school, that somebody would make themselves serious theoretical thoughts about newspapers. As soon as I went to Uni, a whole new perspective opened up in front of me: I wanted to become a journalist. Now i want to become a researcher.
What i actually wanted to say: The idea for the new novel is based on a lot scientific literature which i have yet to read. This story will be based on a big research. Probably the whole idea which i had in the beginning will turn out to be nonsense, because the research prooved me wrong. Of course, this sounds like a awful lot of dry work to do, or better, an awful pile of non-fiction-books to read. I have to read this books anyway and this way I can take subjects into a whole new, wider content (and isn‘t that what learning and understanding is about? Being able to abstract situations and rules?)
But there is also the problem: I can’t just write and invent new stuff. I have to take the stuff I read and put it into the story and make it fit. Now, an outline seemed to me very pretty.

So I got myself a notepad and scribbled down all the stuff I wanted to have in the book and a first idea on how the story is supposed to happen. I also described the main charcters and other important stuff, like places. The book iss et in Vienna, where i live and so I take my notepad with me whereever i go to write down all the details i see and find helpful. For exmple, every day when i walk to work, I pass an awful old and shattered building (trespassers shall be butchered, meh =( ) called Sofiensäle. All the windows are literally wholes, the former lightpink paint isn't really left over and there’s lot of graffitti and trash. I think it’s pretty interesting and i could imagine it to become a setting for a scene.

I had never outlined a story before – that could be the reason for all the unfinished stories on my harddrive. Actually for the novel I’m soon going to finish, there never was an outline – the idea just formed in my head while i was writing and that was enough. The story is very loosely based on my own experiences and all the other stuff takes place in another world - which of course I am free to create.
Of course, also this can be pretty tough - it's hard to keep special things in mind all the time. The problem with creating a whole news society and culture, there will always be someone asking "Why is that so? Why do they do that? How come?" Of course, that's right. You can't just invent something illogical and say "It's that way. No discussion". Remember all the formulas in Math? There is a way to get to them, they just weren't invented, they were found, following strict and logical rules.
Of course, a society is not as easy and logical as Math. Can we explain all that happens around us? Why certain people act certain ways, do certain things? Why do we eat that sort of food? Why do we were that kindof clothes? When it comes to real life, the explanation "It's our culture" has to be enough. Nobody would aks "Why is our culture this way?" it just is. It developed and nobody can explain why it became that way and not totally different (considering there are always dozens of possible developments.)
When you write, prepare to be asked why the society you created in your story has this culture, these habits, those beliefs, this values. Why it developed that way and not the other. That might be the major problem in writing: In real life, not a single society had been formed by only one mind - when you write a book it in most cases is formed by only one mind.
And that is, I believe, a hell of a job.

Love is a doing word

So actually I had an amazing day. Today I had my last exam...it's been alot of laws and rules to learn. After all it was kinda logical, because rules make our system work. I'm not a punk so I think that's basically a good idea.
So this me, happy that the exams are over (until March, bleh.) The exam was at 8 in the morning so I had the whole day waiting for me when I got out! I went back home to play Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone - the pc game that was made when the movie came out. The graphic is bad, the sound is a desaster, but I felt like I was 13 again xD But I soon fell asleep because I nearly hadn't slept all night. Luckily I had scheduled my clock to ring early enough so I could meet a friend at Uni. We went shopping =D Something I hadn't done in months, because of lack of time and money. Now the semester is over which maximizeses my free time and I have a new job. Lucky me!
I bought some new clothes and a sketchbook, something I really needed to. I'm on a quest to learn how to draw. I only can draw really simple comic-style figures (more kinda stick-figures.) and I have to pratice a lot before I can actually upload the first episode of the webcomic I'm planning.
Oh, and I watched the first few minutes of Sisi yes, I spelled that correct - the NEW movie about Austria's Empress. When they made it they promised not to make it as kitschy as the old ones but the dialogues...it's worth a good laugh. And I can satisfy my Sisi-Nerdiness. Haaaah...

Is it over yet?

Whew, can't believe it's "only" Saturday. Feels more like Sunday to me. Nevermind.

Sorry for the bad quality, I should try to take pictures by sunlight, but today I got up really late and did nothing but learn while the sun was up (can't really concentrate in the dark, when it comes to non-creative stuff.) Later on I met two friends of mine who I hadn't seen since December (although we study the same subject. Well, we're all busy people with a screwed up time-management.).
And now I was watching the latest epidose of Austria's Next Topmodel. Actually all the shootings and challenges were kinda boring, but they had an excuse: One of the competitors was a racist and of course she didn't like it that the black (is that politically correct? =S)girl und the german girl got all the jobs. And she was stupid enough to say that in front of a live camera. Well. No comment on her stupidity. I got zero tolerance for people like her, but to be honest I think that was made up and the producer of the show encouraged her to say something like that, to attract more people to watch. No matter if it was her own idea or somebody else's, I hate people who think like that. To throw her out was the only way.

Okay, now I've really gotten onto another trakc *sigh* I'm not so good at discussing serious stuff online so I think I shouldn't do so. Well, what else is new?
I had quite a few ideas for the comic and the second novel Iw ill write. It's not nice to have ideas for a novel yet to be written when the other one isn't even finished yet.
And I want to start poledancing. I think it's a pretty cool workout, I hope the bruises I heard of will be worth it!
Actually i wanted to make a post on "How i write" this weekend, but I think that'll be better when I finished my exams on monday. So see you then =)

Ruby Thursday

...yeah I know, actually it's Rubay Tuesday, but hell, I couldn't think of a nicer title. *facepalm*
As you can see I'm pretty done with this day. Spent 9 hours in the office and now learned (legal stuff I guess I'll never need again...it's like math, only connected to reality, which makes it a little less pain in the butt.). On a brighter note, I talked to my brother on the phone for about an hour and I got my result from my exam this Tuesday: I made it =D Yay me!

Sex and the city...oder was?!

Ich bin ein bekennender Sex and the city-Fan.

Welcome!

Welcome to my new english blog. I've been blogging in german since a few months and I figured out it's about time to also keep you guys up to date when you don't understand german. Please correct any grammar or spelling mistakes (and I bet there are LOTS!)
Whereas my german blog focuses not only on make up and fashion, but also in reviews, tutorials and other stuff, this blog will be more personal. Of course you will get to see many many outfits I wear, but also learn about the other stuff I do, like writing (I'm a self-proclaimed novelist, haha) and drawing. Be sure to check this blog out for some "Behind the Scenes"-Stuff of my webcomic, coming up this febuary. And of course other funny stuff that occured while I was busy living.
Also I will try to post a picture per day - mostly just me and silly faces I make while playing with my webcam.
here's one I took today:
Since i got a bad eye (the one I hid behind hair) no more make up today than just a little lipgloss. This one is by essence and it is called XXXL Shine Lipgloss 13 Rock on. The necklace is a little fairy and I got it from my boyfriend. Thanks, Honey! =)

Looking forward to: Zugfahrt nach Deutschland

Ich lese einfach was mir gefällt.

Was haltet ihr davon?
